Get To Know Me

Hi. I am a multi-faceted artist who has worked in education, primarily higher ed., for 30 years. I have a degree in theater and speech; my focus was acting. I also have a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature, with concentrations in theater, film, and Latin American fiction.

I have written a number of research articles, which can be found in various peer-reviewed journals. The majority of my work was on the nexus between trauma and creativity. For example, I have papers on music and violence in Colombia, dictatorships and theater, and post-Apartheid films.

Creatively, I am a writer, musician, dancer, and actor. My writing consists of micro-fiction as well as novels. Most of my creative writing is for personal enjoyment and is self-published. Recently, I have been writing and performing music. My music is a triumph over the external and internal voices who, for decades, told me I wasn’t good enough. I also study tango and have recently started teaching beginning tango. Lastly, although rare, I will show up in an improv room, and I have recently starred in a short film called “Sanitize This!”

One of my greatest joys is sharing my creativity and knowledge with students and clients. The moment a student or client creates their own dance, sentence, story, or song gives me great joy.

An important aspect of my work is that it has a positive impact on the world. I have been moving away from higher education toward one-on-one coaching to continue that positive impact. I feel that many of us were pushed away from our creative side in school, which has negatively impacted our lives and society. I want to find a way to bring our creative selves back to the forefront.

Recently, I have discovered how many aspects of Buddhist practice can help center me as a writer, artist, musician, and person so that I can accomplish my goals without attachment to the outcome and eliminate, reduce, or at least recognize the suffering that often comes with creation.
